Google Is At It Again! An Update Regarding AMP | You Need To Know About This

Oh boy…

Google really knows how to keep us on our toes, and this update of our older post is further proof of that.

So just what is happening in the Google-sphere?

It has to do with a project called AMP (Accelerate Mobile Pages) which Google launched a few months ago.

As a forward-thinking company, Google took it upon themselves to figure out how their users were surfing the web.

They figured out that more than half of searches were happening on mobile devices.

This research (and some other digging) no doubt triggered what many have affectionately referred to as Mobilegeddon, and the snowball hasn’t finished rolling just yet.

Staying on track with keeping mobile viewers happy, Google has been working behind the scenes on their AMP project and on December 9th, they made they stated that “Google will begin sending traffic to AMP pages in Google Search as early as late February, 2016.”

The plan is that sites that use AMP on their blog will have faster mobile loading speed. Speed that just might help with ranking in 2016, according to Search Engine Land (SEL).

Google hasn’t come out stating that using AMP will be a requirement and the article in SEL stated that “Google made clear that AMP wasn’t the only way to speed up mobile pages.”

It’s clear that Google is pushing everyone to make a better mobile-friendly experience in both design and load time.

AMP is still in its very early stages and is extremely limited in what it does.

To quote Russ from his topic, covering about Google AMP,

“Right now, all [AMP] features are targeted at publishers and not at revenue impacting websites (read as, “SMB websites” that web designers using some CMS create.)”

Since Google has said that AMP isn’t the only option out there for boosting mobile speeds, and fact that AMP is seeming to target publishers, it’s clear this is not one of those situations where everyone needs to panic and scramble to jump on this.

Here at Create My Mobile Website, we wholeheartedly believe in fast-loading websites and having our platform be up-to-date with the best practices.

We are excited to see Google taking their experiment up a notch, but it’s clear that there is still a lot of ground to cover.

With this still being a very young idea, and the lack of urgency and ferocity that has come with this particular update, we still feel that AMP isn’t quite mature enough as a product to be grafted into our platform.

As news on this topic develops we will be covering it here on the blog so don’t forget to share in your Buffer and to follow us on Twitter @CreateMyMobile.
